摘要:
Technologies to sequester SO2 from the point of emission and to convert them into value added products are gaining much attention. We have employed benzothiazolines and their coordination complexes of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions and benzimidazolines in the sustainable activation of SO2. Benzothiazolines and benzimidazolines act as organic hydride donors to activate SO2 into H2SO4 at ambient conditions with the assistance of aerial oxygen by leaving useful benzothiazoles and benzimidazoles, respectively. The complexation of benzothiazolines was used as a strategy to prevent the spontaneous aerial oxidation into benzothiazoles; the complexes could be stored for prolonged periods. We have shown that the binding of SO2 on the electron rich center in benzothiazoline is the first step in the activation of SO2 by isolating the intermediate Bunte salt. In addition to this we have developed new methods to obtain Ni(II) hydrides through solid state reactions; these nickel hydrides could be used in a number of reactions including CO2 and SO2 activation.
